Modiano market is an indoor market in Thessaloniki in Greece. It was built between 1922 and 1925 on the site of the ancient Talmud Tora synagogue. Modiano is a foodie paradise, and its spices, perfumes and the spirit of the old city make it one of the most authentic experiences you can have in Thessaloniki. Most of the shops in the Modiano market are in fact food shops selling spices, cheese, fish, meat, deli produce and pastries. They include Terkenlis, a bakery and patisserie opened for business in 1948 and it continues to thrive to this day.
Terkenlis Agorà Modiano
Thessaloniki, Greece
You can’t leave Thessaloniki without a box full of Terkenlis pastries.
With a successful business spanning more than 70 years, Terkenlis boasts a production unit with a bakery, patisserie and catering facilities covering 8,000 square metres, and a total of 19 stores located throughout Greece. It supplies a selection of Greek and international products, like its generous filled brioches for breakfast and its traditional sfakianes: round pastries filled with meat, cheese and vegetables. But its most iconic product of all is Tsoureki, a sweet plaited bread which can be decorated with red eggs, particularly around Easter time. All of which is baked in a Giorik oven designed specifically with patisseries in mind. Visitors to Terkenlis recommend calling in for a delicious mid-afternoon snack between one museum and the next.
